Gingivitis and Periodontitis

Gingivitis is the first sign of periodontal disease and consists of a superficial inflammation of the gum characterized by swelling, redness and bleeding due to the accumulation of bacterial plaque.

In this phase there is still no destruction of the subgingival bone so the elimination of plaque and concrements leads to healing of the inflamation.

In some cases, the gingivits not treated could develop a deeper inflamation, the periodontitis, which affects the underlying bone and the dental roots with the formation of pockets, (detachment of the gum from the tooth) or gingival recessions associated with gingival bleeding, sometimes with hypersensitivity and in more serious cases with mobility and dental migration.

These lesions can be so deep to lse the tooth.
